The history of Father’s Day

Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June every year in most other countries, similar to Mother’s Day. In Australia, it's celebrated on the first Sunday of September and has been celebrated in Australia since 1925. The history of Father’s Day in Australia began with women who wanted to organise donations, collections and the delivery of small gifts to elderly men alone in hospitals or retirement homes.

This was how our tradition of giving gifts on Father's Day began. The idea for Father's Day originated in 1909 in the US after churches carried out sermons celebrating Mother's Day. The idea was then taken up by Sonora Smart Dodd for Father’s Day to become a day of celebrating fatherhood.
