Mid-Autumn Festival 2026: The Corporate Gifting Calendar Australian Businesses Need

Mid-Autumn Festival 2026: The Corporate Gifting Calendar Australian Businesses Need

If your business sends gifts to Chinese clients, partners or colleagues, 2026 has handed you an awkward calendar. The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on Friday 25 September 2026. In Victoria, that is also AFL Grand Final Friday — a public holiday. Melbourne offices will be empty on the one day the gift is supposed to land.

So the real deadline is not the festival. It is Thursday 24 September. This guide works backwards from that date, using our published dispatch cut-offs, so you can lock in your order with time to spare.

The two dates that decide everything

Date What happens What it means for gifting
Thursday 24 September 2026 Last full business day before the festival Your effective delivery deadline for offices
Friday 25 September 2026 Mid-Autumn Festival + AFL Grand Final Friday public holiday (VIC only) Melbourne workplaces closed; treat as unavailable
Saturday 26 – Sunday 27 September Family reunion weekend Home deliveries should already have arrived

Outside Victoria, Friday 25 September is a normal working day. But most teams have people in more than one state, and running two different deadlines across one gift list is how gifts get missed. Set one national target: arrive by Thursday 24 September.

Your order-by calendar

These dates work backwards from Thursday 24 September using the timeframes on our delivery and shipping page. They assume the longest end of each range, because a corporate gift that arrives late is worse than one that arrives early.

Where it is going Service Order by
WA and NT Standard (3–7 business days) 2pm Tuesday 15 September
WA and NT Express (2–5 business days) 2pm Thursday 17 September
VIC, NSW, SA, QLD, ACT, TAS Standard (1–4 business days) 2pm Friday 18 September
VIC, NSW, SA, QLD, ACT, TAS Express (1–2 business days) 2pm Tuesday 22 September
Melbourne metro Next Day (1pm cut-off) 1pm Wednesday 23 September
Melbourne metro Same Day (1pm cut-off, Mon–Fri) 1pm Thursday 24 September

Two things to note. Standard shipping is free on orders over $100, which matters when you are sending fifty of them. And if any part of your list sits in WA or NT, that single line pulls your whole project deadline back to mid-September.

If you are ordering in bulk, work back further

The shipping table is the last step, not the first. A branded or customised order has approval stages in front of it, and those are the ones that slip.

Stage Aim to finish by
Final recipient list with addresses confirmed Friday 11 September
Hamper selection and budget signed off Friday 11 September
Branded sleeves, ribbon or card artwork approved Tuesday 15 September
Gift messages finalised Wednesday 16 September
Order placed Per the shipping table above

Address quality is the single biggest cause of late corporate gifts. Reception desks change, people move to hybrid schedules, and a hamper sent to an empty office on the Thursday before a long weekend does not recover. Ask each recipient where they would like it sent rather than assuming the office.

What to send when you are not sending mooncakes

Mooncakes are the traditional centrepiece, and Chinese bakeries across Melbourne and Sydney do them well. But a lot of Australian businesses want something that travels safely, keeps longer, suits recipients who do not eat mooncakes, and still reads as a considered Mid-Autumn gift.

The festival is about sharing and reunion. That gives you a clear brief: choose something meant to be opened with other people, not eaten alone at a desk.

Pick Price Why it works for Mid-Autumn
Tea & Sweets Gift Hamper $110 A 63-bag tea chest with sweets to go alongside. Tea and mooncakes are traditionally served together, so this is the closest thing to a Mid-Autumn gift that needs no explaining.
Australian Made Food Gift Hamper $135 Ten Australian-made items including nougat, dried fruit and olives, and no alcohol. The safest single choice for a mixed recipient list.
Sweet & Savoury Food Gift Hamper $85 Alcohol-free, share-sized, red ribbon. Works for a whole-team send where you cannot check who drinks.
Gourmet Penfold Hamper $145 Penfolds is the Australian wine label with the strongest recognition among Chinese recipients. For a client gift, brand familiarity does a lot of the work.
Penfold & Australian Sweets Hamper $175 The same Bin 28 Shiraz with a fuller gourmet selection. A key-account gift that does not need a covering explanation.
Luxury Gourmet Gift Hamper $400 Penfolds Bin 28 and Bollinger champagne together. Reserve this for the relationships where generosity is the message.

One practical caution on alcohol. It is a strong gift for established business relationships, but it is the wrong default for a whole-of-team send, and it cannot be left with a neighbour or at an unattended address. If you are gifting across a mixed group, split the list rather than sending one thing to everyone. Both alcohol-free options above exist for exactly this reason.

Tea poured from a cast-iron teapot beside a shared grazing board and a black gift box with a red ribbon

A gift that gets opened around a table is doing the job the festival asks of it.

The detail most Australian senders miss: ribbon colour

Presentation carries meaning here in a way it does not in most Australian gifting. Red and gold are festive and welcome. White and cream are associated with funerals, and a white satin bow on an otherwise thoughtful gift is the kind of small thing a recipient notices and does not mention.

Our hampers arrive in a black gift box — which reads as premium, not sombre — but the ribbon varies by product. If you are sending to Chinese clients or colleagues, choose a red-ribbon hamper, or ask for red or gold ribbon when you order. Custom ribbon and sleeves are part of our corporate customisation, so it costs you a conversation, not a premium.

Budget bands by relationship

Chinese business gifting norms lean towards generosity for clients and restraint for colleagues. Sending a colleague something conspicuously expensive can create an obligation they did not want.

Recipient Typical band Starting point
Team members and internal colleagues Under $100 Staff gift hampers
Regular clients and account contacts $100–$200 Client gift hampers
Key accounts, partners, senior stakeholders $200–$300 Hampers under $300
Large lists across multiple sites Volume pricing Bulk gift hampers

Consistency matters more than the number. Two clients of similar standing comparing notes and finding a visible gap between their gifts does more damage than a modest gift given evenly.

Branding, cards and the message

Custom sleeves, branded ribbon and personalised cards are available through our custom corporate hampers and branded hampers. Artwork is the stage that most often delays a September order, so treat it as a mid-month task, not a final-week one.

On the card itself, keep it short and warm. A festival greeting that names the occasion is enough:

  • "Wishing you and your family a happy Mid-Autumn Festival."
  • "中秋节快乐 — Happy Mid-Autumn Festival from all of us."
  • "Thank you for your partnership this year. Wishing you a warm reunion this Mid-Autumn Festival."

Avoid anything referencing luck, fortune or prosperity in the Lunar New Year style. Those greetings belong to a different festival. Mid-Autumn is about reunion, family and gratitude — the tone is closer to Thanksgiving than to New Year.

A few cultural details worth getting right

  • Give the gift before the festival day, never after.
  • Present it with both hands if you are handing it over in person.
  • Red and gold ribbon and wrapping are welcome. White and cream are associated with funerals — a dark presentation box is fine, a white bow is not.
  • Do not include clocks, watches, scissors or knives — all carry unlucky associations.
  • Do not expect the gift to be opened in front of you. Opening privately is normal and is not a snub.

Our earlier complete guide to Mid-Autumn Festival gifts in Australia covers the history, the mooncake tradition and the full etiquette list if you want the background.

Interstate and overseas recipients

If your list includes Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia or mainland China, Mid-Autumn is observed there too and local demand peaks in the same week. Start those earlier than your domestic list and check current destination timeframes before you commit — see international gift hampers.

For Australian capitals outside Melbourne, our Sydney and Melbourne ranges are the easiest starting points for city-based teams.

Your one-page checklist

  • Target arrival: Thursday 24 September 2026, not Friday.
  • Flag WA and NT recipients now — they set your real deadline of 15 September.
  • Confirm delivery addresses individually; do not assume the office.
  • Split the list before choosing gifts: colleagues, clients, key accounts.
  • Approve branding artwork by 15 September.
  • Keep card wording to reunion and thanks, not luck and fortune.
  • Check whether alcohol suits each group before sending it to everyone.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Mid-Autumn Festival in 2026?

The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on Friday 25 September 2026. The date follows the lunar calendar — the 15th day of the 8th lunar month — so it moves each year between early September and early October.

Why is 25 September 2026 a problem for Melbourne businesses?

Friday 25 September 2026 is AFL Grand Final Friday, a public holiday in Victoria. Melbourne workplaces will be closed, so a gift scheduled to arrive at an office that day will not be received. Plan for Thursday 24 September instead.

When should I order Mid-Autumn corporate hampers for delivery across Australia?

For arrival by Thursday 24 September 2026: order by 2pm Tuesday 15 September for WA and NT on standard shipping, and by 2pm Friday 18 September for VIC, NSW, SA, QLD, ACT and TAS. Express and Melbourne same-day options run later, but leave no margin for address problems.

Do I have to send mooncakes?

No. Mooncakes are traditional, but they are rich, polarising and not everyone eats them. Tea, share-style grazing hampers and wine are all appropriate Mid-Autumn gifts in an Australian workplace, provided the gift suits being shared rather than eaten alone.

Does ribbon or packaging colour matter?

Yes. Red and gold are festive and appropriate. White and cream ribbon carries funeral associations in Chinese culture, so choose a red-ribbon hamper or request red or gold ribbon when you order. A dark presentation box is not a problem — it reads as premium.

How much should a business spend on a Mid-Autumn gift?

As a guide, under $100 for colleagues, $100 to $200 for regular clients, and $200 to $300 for key accounts and senior partners. Consistency within each group matters more than the total amount.

Can I add company branding to Mid-Autumn hampers?

Yes. Branded sleeves, personalised ribbon and custom cards are available on corporate orders. Allow extra lead time for artwork approval — aim to have it signed off by 15 September 2026.
