The history of Mother’s Day

The idea for a special day to honour mothers was inspired by Anna Jarvis, who founded the American Mother's Day movement in 1908. The idea spread quickly throughout America and soon reached Australia.

The first Mother's Day celebration in Australia was held in 1910 with church services, according to the National Library of Australia. Since then, it has always fallen on the second Sunday in May.

The first Mother's Day celebration with gifts in Australia was held in 1924. A woman from Sydney was inspired to collect charitable gifts for lonely mothers in hospitals who had lost husbands and sons during WW1. This trend then caught on with more people wanting to celebrate their mothers and give them gifts.
